Family & Care Partners: Recovery After the ICU

If someone you care about was recently in intensive care after a serious illness or injury, this course is for you, the person doing the supporting. You may be managing medications and appointments you were never trained for, and wondering why nobody asks how you are doing.
Changes you may notice in your person, like weakness, memory problems, and shifts in mood, can be part of what is called Post-Intensive Care Syndrome, or PICS. Family members can be affected too. Anxiety, depression, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress in family members after an ICU stay are called PICS-F.
The course is six modules of short lessons:
- What Happened to Both of Us
- What You're Seeing in Them
- What Is Happening to Me
- Talking About It
- Sustaining Yourself
- The Long View
Lessons cover delirium, bringing what you notice to your person's providers, talking with children, money and work, and roles that don't go back to how they were. You can skip ahead to what you need most. Most lessons come with audio.
Between the lessons are care partner voices drawn from what care partners describe, brief check-ins, and activities you keep: an emergency reference sheet, a provider visit planner, communication scripts, a plan for looking after yourself, and a letter to the people around you. You can print or copy what you make.
Learn with Liby is a program of Liby Health, a company building recovery support for people who have been through critical illness and for the people who care for them.
